Weekend Reading 5.24.2020

Well hi! I think this has officially been the longest I've gone without updating this blog in the ten years I've been running it – wedding week included. I've been working on something new behind the scenes, which I'm hoping to launch this week, and I've been enjoying the start of nice weather in Maine and trying to motivate myself into job hunting more seriously. With the return of the sun to our state, I've felt as though I've fallen into a semblance of a rhythm, enjoying the outdoors and focusing on my health again, and feeling, dare I say, a little normal? I've even been getting dressed, and not just in loungewear! Sure, on most days it's a tee and leggings, dressed up with simple jewelry, like a pretty, understated ear cuff or gold necklace – I'm all about dressing up a basic outfit with more refined jewelry. But as the weather warms I've been breaking out my dresses and other summer staples – and I can't wait until it's dress weather every day. I'm still loving the dainty jewelry of last summer, but have been adding big hoops and other statement pieces, too.

Not every day is perfect, but I've found that it helps to pencil in some days when I'm not focused on computer work, especially on Wednesdays, which everyone seems to agree is the new Monday. I've also finally started some projects UNRELATED to work of any kind. This is news. BIG news. Because my work and my life are constantly flowing into one another and it has to stop. For my own sanity. How good did it feel to just make something for myself? So good, let me tell you. 10/10 recommend. Five stars.

OK, on to the links. Stay tuned for the aforementioned NEW PROJECT. Because I need to get this done goddammit.

Weekend Reading 4.18

Suddenly it's Saturday. I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling this, but the days of the week are starting to lose meaning. Like everyone else, I'm missing a lot right now, but also so thankful that Chris and I have been healthy and safe. I wish I had something more exciting to report from the past few days, but our activities have likely been much the same as everyone else's: watching a lot of Netflix, Hulu & Prime (I watched both season's of Fleabag this week, and also Blow the Man Down, which is set in Maine and fairly dark, but good. Also Hunters), cooking, baking, working on small projects here and there, and doing lots of reading (about halfway through this book and really enjoying it). Hope you're hanging in there too. xoxo

Shared some thoughts on Thinx this week on IG – remember you can save $10 off your first order if you shop through my profile!

Sephora's Beauty Insider sale is on! Here's what's in my cart: this clean beauty AHA serum (so good), this glowy serum/spf combo foundation (my absolute favorite), this luminizing sunscreen (I've head amazing things), and this body serum (sounds so nice for summer)

As we move into week... week whatever of social distancing, this is important to keep in mind: social distancing is a recipe for depression

I'm so excited for warm weather, if only to wear something other than leggings & sweatshirts right now (jeans are out of the question). A few affordable favorites: this striped mini shift dress, this romantic white midi dress, this pretty gingham dress (40% off with code APRIL)

The most anticipated books of summer 2020

If you're missing a good cappuccino or latte: this top-rated coffee machine is 50% off!

Eyeing up sneakers per usual and I'm very tempted by these classics to wear with voluminous dresses (size down). Also these are giving me major nostalgia

Weekend Reading 4.10.20

How was your week? Mine was… long, a little fraught, with some nice sunny weather in between. True to Maine springtime weather, we got a snowstorm on Thursday night, nearly to the day that we got a storm this time last year. I’m just thankful the snow didn’t stick in Portland, we don’t need to add more of a mess on top of the mess we’re already in. I’ve been struggling to focus this week, but have been trying to remind myself that when it becomes difficult to pay attention to one thing, i can just switch to another, or you know, rest. I spent much of this week trying to finish up this blog transition, editing old photos, and figuring out next steps for putting together some kind of online portfolio for my job search. That makes me sound more productive than I’ve actually been, trust me when I tell you this: every day has been a struggle. A struggle to wake up before 8:30am, a struggle to put on pants, a struggle to figure out when I can reasonably switch from coffee to wine. I feel like I’ve been doing ok, but also, I really, really miss life “before”.
Hope you’re hanging in there. Here’s a few things for your weekend. XOXO

Relatable: Stop trying to be productive (NYT)

My Thinx saved me this week. Seriously with having to use plastic bags again at the grocery store and so many of the planet-friendly swaps we’d made out the window, I love that I can still use Thinx and save money and reduce waste. Shop through my profile to save $10!

If no more movies came out this year, who would win the Oscars?

I’ve been stocking up on loungewear and love this pretty washed sweatshirt. 50% off w/ code ‘REFRESH’

Amazing news: Ogee now offers bundles! Love these sets for trying new products and saving some serious money. Plus, save 15% off with my code ‘Julie2’

How to help frontline workers during the coronavirus crisis

I baked the gluten free chocolate chip cookies from this cookbook last night and they’re SO GOOD. They remind me of the ones my mom used to make!

A DIY I want to make: DIY patchwork jeans

The back of this dress is so stunning - and I love the sleeves. So perfect for spring – and comfy!

Just bought these cute pajamas and they’re so soft! Eyeing this cozy robe to match.

Weekend Reading 4.3.20

Hello Friday and hello friends. How was your week? Mine was... weird, as I'm sure yours was too. I woke up this morning thinking about how I used to feel on Fridays, the wave of relief that in just a few hours, I'd be released for the weekend, a long and oftentimes overwhelming list of to-dos in front of me. Now that I'm living the exact opposite of that, I'm not sure which is the more compelling option (I hesitate to say "worse" option or "better" option because I'm very grateful to be healthy and sheltered right now – but I'd prefer the outlook to be a sunnier one). I struggled a bit this week, with loneliness, frustration, with having a difficult time controlling things and myself in the midst of all this. While my mind logically understands that what we're experiencing as a world is traumatic and there's no playbook, I'm really mourning where I was personally before everything really hit. This weekend I'm going to try to find something to work on that's more tactile. We brought our sewing machine home last weekend, so I might sew, or I might dig my watercolors out of the closet. Chris and I have both been baking a lot, too. Trying to stay busy and fill some hours not in front of Netflix or Hulu (but let me be clear, we've been watching a lot of TV, too). Hope you're doing ok and staying healthy, xoxo.

ICYMI: Cozy loungewear I'm loving (just ordered this sweatshirt, these leggings and these pants... wishing I had ordered this top too)

If you're looking for some fun DIY projects, this site has always been my go-to (we're not big on celebrating Easter, but these naturally-dyed robin's eggs might be on my list)

I finished this book last week (it was fine, readable, a little too heavy on describing every little thing) and started this book (so far I really like it, though it's a little hard to keep track of the years when everything takes place)

Now is the perfect time to try out Thinx if you've been thinking about it! Remember you can save 10% off your first order if you shop through my profile

Speaking of baking things - these homemade Samoa cookies look like a must-make

One of my favorite dresses from last summer is back in a bold new print. Very tempted. I'm all about shapeless things right now. Also please get here soon, spring.

Have you been seeing fluffy coffee everywhere? Me too. And I want to make it! (this is my favorite healthy instant coffee)

How pretty is voluminous puffy sleeve top? Love this navy dress too - both so perfect for summer (I'm dreaming of warmer days)

Are your dreams super weird and vivid right now? Mine are. Here's a theory why.

If you've been thinking of going more sustainable, maybe check out United By Blue's sustainability shop. Save 15% with the code 'orchidgrey15'

Weekend Reading 3.28.2020

And all of a sudden it's the weekend. How are you holding up? We're on stay-at-home orders here, something I welcomed after seeing so many people out and about last weekend and in the weeks between (honestly I'd like to see the state take more concrete actions) – Chris and I are hanging in there, trying to limit the amount of news we're taking in to only the essentials, watching a lot of Netflix, and worrying about leaving our house. We're anxious. Like most people. It's strange to not really have the ability to think ahead right now – there are so many variables. Plans that seemed so set in stone a month ago – a trip to New York, a friend's wedding – have vaporized, replaced with a day-by-day, hour-by-hour schedule that involves a lot of cookies, wine, sleep and, again, Netflix. I've been journaling a lot, that helps. Trying to exercise (though not being super successful with it). And obsessively cleaning and organizing. I've been thinking a lot about what the after of all this will look like. What will we have learned? What will we do differently? How many people will I hug? I'll run out and get a haircut, that's for sure. And gleefully go for a run without worry or fear of breathing in someone else's air. What strange times these are – did we ever imagine ourselves here? Woof. Anyway. On the docket for this weekend? Probably a lot of the same – we've been doing a lot of organizing lately and I'd like to start putting aside things to sell once the post office is deemed a safe place to go. Tomorrow will look a lot like today, a fact I need to come to grips with. Hope you're doing ok, xoxo.

Two posts from this week: Books to read while social distancing, and how to cope with job loss

If you're looking for a more sustainable alternative to tampons and pads now that grocery trips are few and far between, check out Thinx! New customers can save $10 off their order by shopping through my page – and you can learn why I like them here

My favorite cleansing oil is back in stock! Save 15% with the code 'Julie2'

I'll limit the amount of Covid info I share because I think we've all had to take in a lot, but found these two pieces interesting and poignant: That discomfort you're feeling is grief & how the coronavirus will change us

One of my favorite Reformation dresses is on sale right now (can't wait until date nights outside the house are a thing again)

Have you heard of the National Emergency Library? Fascinating and very cool (NYT)

Like most people, I've been living in my softest clothes recently – and looking to add a few pieces to my repertoire. Take 25% off at Lou & Grey – love the colors of this supersoft tee and these wide leg pants as an alternative to leggings (also eyeing this pretty sweater and these adorable shorts)

I've been focusing on getting my skin balanced during this time of less makeup and just bought this enzyme mask after testing it out earlier in the year, I've heard nothing but good things about it. I also picked up this simple face oil and love it so far

Because I think we all need this: the 100 best movies on Netflix right now

Weekend Reading 2.28

Happy weekend! I'm going to be real with you – I'm a big ball of anxious, stressed out energy right now. Very tired, equally frazzled, trying to figure out how to maximize my time at home this weekend while I have a work event smack in the middle. It's been one of those weeks – it didn't go well, and all I want is some uninterrupted alone time. Hope your week was better than mine – and that you have a fun weekend planned! xo

Ogee is having a big anniversary sale! Save 20% off sitewide! A few of my favorites: the Cleansing Oil (seriously SO GOOD), the Sculpted Lip Oil in clear and Gardenia, and the Jojoba Glow Face Oil (I mix with a vitamin C powder to make a scrub)

Topical: How to wash your hands (see also, I can't stop touching my damn face)

So excited about the new United By Blue fanny packs! So cute, so handy - and 15% off with the code 'orchidgrey15'

My absolute favorite workout leggings come in fun new colorways – they seriously don't budge (also love the new St. Vincent collection)

How are we feeling about the return of the flare jean? I think I can get behind this minimal style from Everlane

Doja Cat's new video: a tribute to TRL (I can get behind this)

I got a second hole pierced in my ears last week and can't wait for it to heal so I can wear little hoops like these and these – so pretty paired with something like this

On being a "good girl" - important

Amazing news: Scotland is poised to become the first country to make period products free

One bed, two blankets - possibly the secret to getting a good night's sleep with a partner?

I received a sample of this fragrance in an order this week (got this, this and this) and it smells so good - fresh but not fake and just a touch masculine

Weekend Reading 2.7.2020

Happy Friday! This was one of those New England winter weeks that started out feeling like spring and ended with a fresh 8 inches of snow on the ground and ice blanketing the trees. Ugh. I'm really trying to embrace winter and appreciate this time of year, but those few days spent walking back and forth to the gym and downtown and running outdoors felt really, really nice. Oh well. This weekend is looking like another quiet one. I'm hoping to get outside and might head up North for some cross-country skiing or the Camden Toboggan Races but otherwise need to do some bookkeeping and tax-prep (so fun!). Hope your weekend is a cozy one! xo

FYI: I have a new code for Ogee Organics: 'Julie2'. use it for 15%off your next order (psst, receive a free lip oil with any order over $100!

Do you celebrate Valentine's Day? I always love the pretty V-day themed clothing and accessories (like these pretty clips) that pop up this time of year

ICYMI January in review

A Valentine's message to Target: ditch the plastic (click to sign)

Speaking of V-day, how romantic are these vintage-inspired button studs? So classic but updated. And these nameplate necklaces would make the perfect gift (hint hint)

Ha - love this: Jimmy Fallon thinks he's cancelled after calling Ru Paul a drag queen (scroll to the bottom for the video)

Speaking of Valentines, these adorable chocolates would make a sweet (!) gift for a friend, mom or sister (this sunny set is cute too)

The case for fanatical optimism

I finished this book last night (recommended) and now it's time for a new one! Using Grace's Amazon Picks as inspiration – she always has great recommendations

Texting with Aidy Bryant (who else is excited to watch Ru Paul host SNL this weekend?)

I don't shop often at H&M but went there last week looking for a hat. I found the perfect orange creamsicle hat (now needed in every other color – very thick and warm and also ON SALE)  and this super cozy fleece (fits slightly oversized, I bought a small)

6 outfits to get you through Bad Winter, because it's officially here (Crystal's looks are always my favorites)

Weekend Reading 1.24.2020

My goodness – how is it already January 24th? This month somehow felt a million years long and also so very short. I've just gotten back from a long day on the road from work and to say I'm exhausted and excited for the weekend would be an understatement. I have NO PLANS. Other than a haircut and to maybe make a trip to Sephora to re-up on this serum (it's a hit, will review soon). Also, it's my birthday on Monday so I'll be doing some thinking in terms of how I'd like to celebrate. I'm not a huge birthday party person, but do enjoy using the day (and let's be honest, the days leading up to the day) as an excuse to treat myself a bit. This year I'm not going crazy because I'm planning on visiting family in Florida soon (sun! warmth!), but I'd like to maybe get myself another pair of these leggings or maybe an extra cozy cashmere piece (love these). January's been a quiet month for me, I've been working more on myself than spending much energy on outward things, trying to get my head in the game for a new year and just generally feeling like a hibernating bear. I hope you're having a cozy month too! xo

I've really been missing running lately – the sidewalks here are so icy it feels impossible – but loved these tips for running in winter from Grace

January always sends me into a major style rut and I've been feeling super uninspired lately. I think . it's time for a closet clean out soon... I've been eyeing these under $200 finds (love that leopard top handle bag!), a cute pair of jeans, and an edgy tee or sweatshirt (love this designer's pieces)

Prepare to be mesmerized by fish (also the headline is pretty cute)

I just ordered these pants and i can't waittttt to wear them – apparently I'm slowly morphing back into my high school self? But so cute with a chunky sweater and equally chunky sneakers (and chunky jewelry? Yes, that too!)

More of this please: 3 older women style their favorite pieces from their closets. "The pants are plaid, and well, they're fabulous")

Ogee has two new lip tint shades and they're gorgeous - Elenia, a soft coral, and Fuchsia – use my code 'JulieLovesOgee' for 15% off!

"Would you adopt this jerk?"

Speaking of new colors – Thinx also launched two new shades, Juniper & Pine, and they're so pretty. Shop through my Leaders profile for $10 off your first order! I also recently wrote a piece about Thinx if you're like to learn more

This was really useful: 5 ways to actually solve your shoe storage

A really great sale: save an extra 50% off sale items from Anthropologie! This puffer coat looks so cozy and I'm seriously considering this snake-print puffer

In case you need some dinner inspiration: 30 sheet-pan dinners & desserts (my dinner tonight was an RX Bar and some cashews so all of these look incredible)

Heads up: If you're looking for cashmere on sale, here it is, plus take an extra 25% off with the code 'Sale25'!

Weekend Reading 1.12.20

Hi! Hello! It's 2020 and dang is this year already a doozy. I was writing something before this, rounding up my favorite products from 2019, and realized that the post was taking a turn into more personal territory. All of a sudden it was a reflection on being better and decidedly not about my favorite items from the past year. I'm still going to publish both of those, but need more time to think about it. Basically, I've been feeling it lately. As in, all the feelings, most of them difficult ones. It's made it hard to function normally, frankly, knowing that so many are hurting while I go about my daily life. Especially functioning on the internet. I know I'm not alone in this. This weekend I'm working on breaking out of the rut for a bit, seeing some friends and spending time on our beautiful coast. I'm also thinking of ways to help and get more involved. More on that later, I've included a few links below that could be useful. I hope you're doing OK, friends. Remember to take care of your hearts. It's hard to be human sometimes. xo

A few ways to help Australia: If you're a crafter, here are a bunch of ways to lend your skills to help wildlife; the World Wildlife Fund is working to help animals and has a plan to replant two billion trees after the fires; The Fire Relief Fund for First Nations Communities is collecting funds to support indigenous communities

If you're sick of winter dressing already (I am), a few easily layerable options: love these winter-to-spring transition pieces (that light denim dress would be so cute with cozy tights and big combat boots), my favorite leggings that are also perfectly acceptable as pants (just got them in lime, thinking "daybreak" next. My goal is to be the brightest person at the gym), very curious about these corduroy pants from Everlane. Anyone tried them?

A good read if you're working to strengthen relationships this year: How negativity can ruin relationships

I've been listening to this podcast lately and it's one of my top recommendations I've been sharing with people. I even shared it with my therapist. Episode 14 could have been written about me.

Another great podcast episode, especially if you're working on changing some habits: how to build better habits

I've been experiencing some cystic acne lately and along with working on my inside, I've been using this trio of products with great success. I use the oil only at night and the mask as more of a spot treatment. Then in the AM I use this serum and this oil. A+ so far. (it should be noted that none of it smells good, but then again the best skincare rarely does)

Sezane denim has gone eco-friendly! I have my eye on this pair and this pair. So classic!

The case for co-housing – I'm intrigued.

Love these tips for looking more put-together

This article about almond milk has been making the rounds and I think it's important. It's hard to be perfect, but I'll be switching to oat for the little amount of "milk" I use

The 10 most anticipated books of 2020

I've got my eye on this chunky under $80 sweater – perfect? It might be!

Weekend Reading 12.22

Happy Sunday! This weekend FLEW by and I really can't believe that Christmas is just a couple of days away – I'm not ready, but I'm long past the point of being stressed out about it. Chris and I are on the other side of some big events at work and have the next few days off together and I can't wait to just relax. We're hosting Christmas Eve dinner and then staying put on Christmas day – all I want to do is chill, maybe take a walk and watch some movies. However you celebrate, I hope your holidays are lovely and relaxing and all you need them to be. xo

It's been SO COLD this week, officially boots-all-the-time weather. I've ben living in these boots this winter and have another pair in my cart, best paired with chilly day layers and a great scarf

What's a personal life? No. Really.

This great bag looks way more expensive than it is. Also love this beaded bag - so fun for NYE!

Weekend Reading 12.15

Happy weekend! This one feels especially well-earned, even though I'm spending most of it – surprise! – working. I'm sure pretty much anyone who works any kind of retail or customer-facing job can relate – damn, the holidays are insane. My house? Not decorated at all. Work, on the other hand? I created a damn Christmas miracle last week. Wreaths were hung, trees were trimmed, stockings were stuffed, none of which were mine.... and I'm exhausted. This year has felt especially harried with the addition of several large events on the work calendar – so safe to say, the holidays have been a little different for Chris and I this year (for anyone catching up, we work together and barely see each other). I feel so behind (the photo above is from last year). But I'm trying to not let it get me down. This coming week is going to be even crazier than the last, but I'm hoping to maybe get a tree at some point. Anyway, shoutout to anyone else whose holidays aren't picture perfect – I'm right there with you.

I've recently partnered with United By Blue and am so pleased to share a discount with you! Use code 'orchidgrey15' for 15% off!

Reformation is having a big old sale and marry Christmas to meeee. Love this cute little mini.

If you're in need of a little positivity (I am)

These beauty bundles from Ogee are the perfect last minute gift for a friend or family member – remember to use the code 'JulieLovesOgee' for 15% off!

Looking for a really nice stocking stuffer? These CBD bath salts would be ace

Would you like to cry? Watch this Polish holiday ad

An astrological t-shirt you'll actually want to wear (and would make such a great gift)

Yes Yes Yes Greta Thunberg

Love these under $200 winter style staples (that neon orange sweater!)

Mark your calendars and plan a trip to NY: this Whitney Museum exhibition sounds amazing

I bought this serum foundation during black Friday and LOVE it so far, especially layered over this primer

Brene Brown on the difference between empathy and sympathy

YUM this vegan broccoli "cheese" soup sounds so good (update: I made it, is IS good)

The case for holiday outfit moderation (January!)

Speaking of all-year-round glitter, how pretty are these glitzy jewelry pieces? Love those fringy stars. Also have my eye on a cute mini bag for the holidays.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's new movie looks pretty incredible

Weekend Reading 12/7

Happy weekend – and happy December! We have some snow on the ground and it's really feeling like the holidays around here. We're headed to a cookie party tonight so I'm spending the day baking with my mom – and maybe walking downtown to do some holiday shopping – and tomorrow I'm hoping to spend the day outside. This is that magical time of the year when winter still feels novel – so I'm trying to take advantage as much as I can. Hope you have something fun planned! xo

FYI: The Shopbop sale was extended for sale items! Use the code 'JOY19' for an extra 10% off sale items.

If you're looking for the perfect stocking stuffer, OGEE is offering a free beauty bag + sculpted lip oil (my favorite) with any order of $95! I also LOVE the cleansing oil. Use my code 'JulieLovesOgee' for 15% off

Have you seen the Peloton ad everyone's been talking about? It's very, very cringy if fr any other reason that this woman seems so meek – personal opinion

December wishlist: A go-with-everything bag (love those snakeskin pieces!), a new extra warm jacket (that cinnamon color!) and some cozy winter boots (my entire family swears by the Joan of Arctic boots), and a pretty headband for this week's work holiday party

I bought these jeans during Black Friday weekend and LOVE THEM. I'm planning on purchasing the lighter wash next.

Love this holiday movie thread – what's your favorite movie to watch for the holidays?

This sequin skirt would be so pretty for the holidays or New Year's Eve – or just everyday styled with a cozy sweater and boots

The false promise of morning routines – I LOVE this and this it's an important read. Also my mornings are always filled with anxiety.

Do you make treats for the holidays? We always do but I have no idea what we're making this year – here's 30 ideas for holiday cookies

Guys, RuPaul has a candle and I thought you should know

Easy vegan eggnog. Yes. Please.

Wow, wow, wow... these stained glass table lamps would be a gorgeous gift – for yourself or someone you really love

Some great ideas from Joanna for gifts to give yourself this year (hint: none of them are really "things")

Weekend Reading + 10 Black Friday Sales I'm Shopping

Happy post-Thanksgiving coma! How are you feeling today? I'm exhausted and just so ready for this weekend. Lately I've been working to reconnect with the activities I enjoy doing that aren't work or blog or IG-related. I realized last weekend that I spend almost every weekend doing some version of the same routine: working, maybe walking downtown, cleaning up the apartment, repeat, repeat. It's the opposite of interesting and I need a change – I miss yoga and I realized I've needed to reignite some semblance of curiosity within myself. So this weekend I'm taking an intro to climbing class and getting out for a run. Sounds simple and the run part probably a little unexciting but I've been in such a rut lately that this is what excites me – ha! I'm also planning on making my holiday gifting list. I'm not doing much shopping right now, but I am including a few sales I'm shopping tonight – mostly for myself to be honest! Happy long weekend friends!

xo

10 Black Friday sales I'm shopping:

Ogee Organics: Ogee is 20% off site-wide! This set would be amazing for a friend, sister or mom

Outdoor Voices: Save 25% off site-wide INCLUDING sale items! I'm ordering a couple pairs of these leggings (I swear by them for running, lifting, etc) and this long sleeve merino tee for outdoor winter workouts/hikes

Weekend Reading 11.24

Happy snowy Sunday – I'm feeling pretty cozy, getting some work done before the holidays hit this week. I know for a lot of people, the holidays start right after Halloween – at least they do in my work life – but for me, I like to wait until Thanksgiving for my real life. Unlike last year though, I'm actually excited to decorate. Last holiday season I felt so overwhelmed by work holiday responsibilities that I really didn't enjoy the holidays at all, but this year I feel differently. Life has been busy, for sure, but I'm determined to actually set boundaries this year and enjoy myself. On Tuesday, Chris and I have tickets for A Drag Queen Christmas, which I'm so excited about (the last time we went was when we still lived in Philly and I consider this our holiday tradition), and we have a mini getaway planned soon too. I haven't started shopping yet, though! Have you? I need to make my list and check out some local shop small events. Hope you're enjoying a cozy Sunday, too xo

I've been double cleansing for about 6 months now – using an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup then following with a second cleanser – and I feel like my skin is responding really well This is my favorite oil cleanser and it's on sale right now!

It's been COLD here since basically October 1st, and I've been on the hunt for cute, cozy winter accessories to compensate. Love this fuzzy striped hat, this fluffy knit beanie, and this classic red hat made from recycled material

Weekend Reading 11.17

Greetings from day 4 of my hastily taken vacation! Am I on a tropical island? Enjoying a remote getaway? Nope! I'm home, using some days I didn't realize I had (and had to use before the end of the year) to recoup and get myself back together. I'm trying to get some personal stuff done and refocus myself before the holidays really hit – it's sort of working. Hope your weekend was relaxing, firneds. xo

I'm sure you've heard, it's really cold in the Northeast. In fact it feels like January – so here's the secret to actually enjoying winter. Made me laugh "simply refuse to participate in the misery olympics"

Haaaaaapy Friday. What a week, huh? According to – seemingly – everyone and their mother, this week was a rough one. It was for me at least, so I'm very excited for a couple of days off. Tomorrow is my quiet day, I'm hoping to get to the farmers market, clean up after the week, and get some freelance work done. And on Sunday I'm off to Boston for the day to see Mary. Can't wait. Hope your weekend is fun, relaxing, hopefully both. xo

Weekend Reading 10.26

It's blowing my mind that we're already at the tail end of October – how? When? This month went by so fast, it's scary. I mean, not to scare you but next week I'll be prepping work for holiday decorating – yikes! Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though. This week felt like a marathon and I'm so happy to have a couple of days to regroup. I'm getting a massage this morning (!!!) which I'm so excited about after spending so many hours in the car this week, and then tomorrow I don't know! It's supposed to rain and my group hike was cancelled, so the day is free!

Long Weekend Reading 10.12

Happy long weekend! It's been a minute, huh? Fall is in full swing here and I've been busy. My brother was in town for the past couple of weeks so we did all the fall things we could while he was around: hiking, apple picking, exploring the coast... all this, plus a little too much happening personally lead to a little hiatus that wasn't intended. Now that things have calmed down, I'm looking forward to taking full advantage of my three day weekend. Today calls for rain, so I'm planning to do some fall decorating and closet-cleaning-out so I can take advantage and get outside on the other days. What are you up to? Hope it's something good!

A very sweet story about an octopus in a cup that's also a good reminder to skip the single-use plastic when you can

These candles are my kind of fall decor (and they're on sale!) (there's a diffuser too!)

On my October wishlist: a cozy cashmere beanie, a classic pair of jeans, and the perfect pair of slouchy boots

I've heard great things about this face essence - that it's a dupe for SKII! – just ordered, will report back...

Who would Tavi Gevinson be without Instagram? Worth considering for all of us.

Have you seen Blair's new collection for Nordstrom? It's so good! Love this polkadot dress.

Hot Girl Summer is over – thank god for Fat Bear Fall

Weekend Reading 9.21

Happy Saturday, friends! I just got back from working as a photographer's assistant for a wedding and I. Am. Beat. This week was a long one spent checking off some big to-dos, the most exciting of which is I finally pulled the trigger and bought a car. Chris and I have been sharing one car for months, and while I wish owning two wasn't necessary, with his schedule it absolutely is. So, now that I have a way to get around outside of my easily walkable radius, tomorrow I'm planning on taking my paddleboard out to enjoy the second wave of summery weather that's hit Portland. I can't believe it's already the end of September – this year has flown by at an incredible pace, but I'm also really excited about the next few weeks. My brother is coming to town – the last time I saw him was in 2017 – and to be honest, I'm just really looking forward to fall and everything that comes with it. Apple picking? Yes please. Fall hikes? Sign me up. I'm ready for all of it.

xo

A great and powerful read: Jonathon Van Ness comes out as HIV-positive (NYT)

Related: I just ordered his book

How to join the youth climate strike – no matter your age. Did you protest this week? I couldn't go but am hoping to this Friday!

I've been on the hunt for a new fall coat - loving this menswear-inspired plaid jacket, this cozy shearling moto jacket and this dreamy faux-fur jacket

Are you going to see the new Downton Abbey movie? I have so much catching up to do!

For the true crime lovers out there, a long read: the hunt for the serial killer of Laredo

I have my eye on this cozy cashmere sweater – so pretty with jeans or even with a skirt for fall

Why doesn't anyone feel like an adult anymore?

Found: a really good matte black nail polish (perfect for the season)

How to make a lifestyle change actually stick – I needed this

Can you tell I'm on a sweater kick? Loving this cozy striped sweater

This is pretty major – Allure just launched a clean beauty seal!

Love this modern take on the liner jacket - especially in that ochre color

These chai spice cookies are on my must-make list

Iced horchata latte? Sign me up.

OK, this pink faux-fur moto jacket is too good

Weekend Reading 9.13

Happy Friday the 13th! I feel like I've been looking forward to this weekend for, well, weeks. Life has felt like a whirlwind lately, and I'm in desperate need of some downtime. I don't have much planned for myself this weekend, for once – I'm doing some car research so I can hopefully get myself a car next week (a big reason why life has felt so crazy has been sharing a car with someone who works 90 hours a week), and going to the Portland Yard Sale on Sunday. And cleaning my disaster of an apartment – not sure about you, but you can tell a lot about my mental state by the state of my apartment, and right now it's in shambles. There are about 1000 other things I'd like to add to my to-do list, but I'm trying – REALLY TRYING – to slow down and take the time I need to get back to my baseline of feeling somewhat better (I need sleep, badly). Anyway – I hope YOUR weekend is restful and relaxing and exactly what you need it to be. If you're in Maine/Portland, come out to the Portland Yard Sale! I'll have a rack of vintage there and all proceeds go to RAICES to support families separated at the border.

XO

Fall hit fast this year (it's currently 40°f!) and I'm really excited about dressing for it. I have my eye on this cool bag company for a good work-friendly bag, some hiking-inspired sneakers (that green pair!), and some kind of cozy, fluffy faux-fur coat

Have you seen the new Madewell x Dickies collab? Giving me major flashbacks in the best way. I have these pants and this jumpsuit (pink!) in my cart.

Teens explain their back-to-school outfits (everything looks like the Delias catalog from 1997 and I LOVE IT) (Related: I feel old but that's OK)

I have plants to bake something this weekend – and I think it might be this delicious-looking pumpkin bread

I have my eye on this pretty layering necklace – I haven't seen one like this before and think it would be so nice on its own or layered up

Have you seen Everlane's new corduroy pieces? I wasn't sure about them but have since convinced myself that I need these high waist wide leg pants - so good with sneakers and a vintage tee, right? I'm thinking Navy...

Always love seeing who Bon Appetit nominates for their 50 Best Restaurants list – no Maine on there, but I do see Providence and Boston!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing more size representation on Shopbop! They still have a ways to go for total inclusivity, but I love that they didn't make a big deal about it (You know what I mean? Some companies seem to only do it for the press coverage and like they're doing people a favor – I like that they just did it). MORE OF THIS PLEASE!

My favorite loafers now come in a (really good) snake print - ordering now!

Started this powerful book this week - so far I'm loving it, one part memoir, one part self-help/advice, but from someone who has experienced more than most of us will ever experience in one lifetime

What you can do now to financially prep for the holidays - I needed this, but also how about emotionally prepping? Thinking about that a lot lately.

The best new cookbooks for fall – I seriously need some inspiration, I feel like I've been stuck on autopilot recently
