Hello, I'm Julie! I've made my way from Maine to Boston to Pittsburgh to Philly... and back again, and blogged about it along the way. Currently: Portland, ME. Check out my About page or F.A.Q. below to learn more about me. Thanks for reading!
So I live in soft clothes now. There's something truly miserable about wearing jeans and other rigid fabrics at home and with our new stay-at-home orders, I'm home all the time – like hopefully everyone else – so it's been nothing but sweatshirts, leggings, pretty bralettes, and slippers. At least until it warms up. It may be spring everywhere else, but it's mud season in Maine, which means the temperature is still hovering in the 30's (oh what I wouldn't give to wear a breezy dress on my patio right now!). And I'm beginning to crave a few new items to add to my very limited rotation because the same black leggings are beginning to feel a little worn out. So I'm looking for a couple of oversized sweatshirts, maybe some slim joggers or sweatpants, and some yoga pieces to maybe motivate myself into moving from my couch (baby steps). Staying inside and within our own homes is more important than ever right now – we might as well be cozy, right?
What are you wearing these days? Are you getting dressed every morning or spending most days in your pajamas?
Despite that fact that it's fall, i.e. everyone's favorite season for getting dressed and actually having fun with it, I've felt like I've been in a major style rut lately. Between a busy schedule and my first cold of the season – yaaaaayyyyy – I've been living in cozy loungewear more than I'd like to admit (although not a bad thing). Working from home most of the time doesn't help the situation, either. So when a new style challenge from A Vintage Splendor popped up in stories, I jumped on board. This time around it was a week of monochrome outfits. If you follow me on Instagram, you've likely seen some of these already in my stories, but I wanted to gather them all here – for myself to refer back to, and for anyone looking for some style inspiration of their own. I used this challenge to not only break out of my style rut, but made sure to take some photos of each look, too – because I've been feeling pretty uninspired when it comes to photography outside of work as well, and this was a great excuse to take photos of something other than stilllifes!
I love doing these style challenges because they force me out of my comfort zone and style items in my closet that may have been gathering dust – or explore different ways to wear pieces that are already on heavy rotation (like those snakeskin boots!). The last style challenge I took part in was 7 Days of Dresses, arguably more difficult than these monochrome looks (especially because it was April and still definitely winter in Maine), but no less fun. Monochrome was relatively easy, but the challenging part was making each look work for work. It's fun to put together outfits, but if I can't move in them, it's back to the drawing board. Below I'm sharing five real outfits from my week:
All White: When in doubt, all black or all white always looks amazing. I threw on a tan jacket to head to a coffee shop for the afternoon and felt like a giant latte. Not a bad thing. Paired with classic chelsea boots, this felt like a winner for fall.
All Navy Blue: The only * new * item I styled all week were these wide leg cords from Everlane. I got them, and I really wanted to wear them – so all blue it was. I paired them with a thrifted top I've had for ages but had never worn, and a thrifted blazer I picked up last month.
All Green: This skirt is actually a dress, a rare fast fashion purchase but one I could easily picture being worn several different ways – it's a slipdress, so I plan to layer it with sweaters, turtlenecks, and blazers.
All Black: You can never, ever go wrong with all black and a classic moto jacket. But if it needs some spicing up, snakeskin helps.
All Nutmeg: We deemed this "nutmeg" on Instagram – definitely not pumpkin spice.
At time of writing, it's 54°f here in Maine... I think it's ok that I start talking about fall. While I won't wish summer away just yet, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited for the opportunity to throw on a light sweater and dabble in transitioning my summer wardrobe to styles meant for cooler weather. This time between summer and fall is one of my favorites, especially during that sweet spot when you can wear sweaters thrown over dresses and paired with skirts – no boots or tights just yet. That's the time of year I love, and I'm looking forward to carrying a few summer trends over to the cooler temps, namely the dainty gold necklaces I've been wearing non-stop for the past few months.
As someone who always gravitated towards chunkier statement jewelry and lots of silver, I never thought I'd be so won over by the layered necklace trend I've been seeing everywhere, especially in gold – but here we are. I love them peeking out from button-ups and, come cooler weather, I'll be wearing them with blazers and fluffy, fuzzy sweaters – gold just feels classic, simple, and easy to throw on to finish off an outfit. Life has been so busy lately, anything that I can do to feel pulled together and somewhat with it these days is a lifesaver – the styles I've been drawn to are on the simpler side, easy to wear and allow me to move freely. Maybe this is why I've been taken with smaller, more delicate jewelry – it's simply lighter.
What are you most excited to wear for the upcoming season?
Are you ready for fall? I'm 100% not... but I'm definitely appreciating the cooler nights and mornings that Maine has been experiencing lately. Waking up to Portland's fog and the smell of the ocean is just one of the many reasons why I love living here, and this time of year seems to heighten the ocean's effect. The past few weeks have been the perfect little taste of the season to come while our feet remain firmly planted in summer (the thought of putting fall boots on is enough to make me shudder). This season is short, I'm not about to wish it away... BUT I've been seeing a lot of very cute looks around lately, and I've shifted my shopping focus to searching out a few key pieces suitable for cooler weather – like a great plaid menswear blazer and delicate, dainty blouses (I found the one pictured here secondhand in Portland). Both so perfect with dainty jewelry all layered up, a look I've been leaning into hard lately – exhibit A: this pretty crescent moon necklace from Local Eclectic. Do I feel like the moon's #1 fan when I wear it with my crescent tattoo showing? Yes. Do I care? No. Also also, you can save 10% off your first purchase from Local Eclectic with the code 'Julie10' - enjoy! What are you loving for fall 2019?
When we decided to move back to Maine and subsequently began telling friends and family, one of the main questions I received was "but what about the winters?" Winter in Maine does indeed pack a certain kind of intensity. It's cold, it's dark, it's very, very snowy, and it's long. But it's also sunny and bright, and unlike winter in the big city, there's a ton of stuff to do. We currently live within throwing distance of several major ski areas (and some not-so-major ones that are super fun, too), we have snowshoes, and trails, and fires in the wood stoves. But one thing that makes winter in Maine (and winter in general) much more bearable? Good winter boots. Warm boots, yes, but also boots you actually want to wear. I have a great pair of Sorel that I got at a blogger conference back in 2011 (yes, 2011, Sorel's are durable af), they're sort of cute, but their functionality far outweighs their looks. And functionally-minded as I may be, I'm not spending five months in the same pair of boots that I don't like to look at. When serious weather hits, I'll be in my Sorel's, but for all the other days, I'm stocking up on well-treaded boots that look good, too.
So, knowing what we were in for, one of the first things I did when we were moving was start looking out for decent-looking, well-treaded winter boots. Kitten heel ankle boots are cute and all, but they've got no place in my wardrobe this year. I've made peace with the fact that some lucky women in less snowy locales can wear cute, dainty boots but I am not one of them. Nope, I need full snow tires, studded, with chains. I'm sharing a few favorite winter boot options today, in case that's you, too:
2. My Dr. Martens are probably my favorite purchase this season, mostly because I'll be able to wear them in every season. This pair and this pair both feature classic Doc styling with the addition of cozy shearling and this pair is just fun.
3. While not traditionally winter boots, this chelsea-style pair of rain boots would be cozy with a pair of thick socks and great for a slightly warmer and slushy day.
4. Literally every woman in Maine owns some version of these boots for a reason. This pair is superior because of the shearling and taller last - these are what you want on your feet when "weather" hits. Serious weather.
5. These boots have been one of my favorite purchases this year. Definitely worth investing in leather protector, but they look great with nearly everything and the sole is super well-treaded. This pair is gorgeous (and very tempting) as well.
6. Someday I will invest in a pair of these classic hikers. They'd look great with jeans and your hiking gear and the quality is top-notch.
Pro tip: For extra warmth, wear ski socks beneath your boots! I love Smart Wool socks because you can find thinner options that will keep your feet feeling warm and cozy. Cotton socks in the winter often get wet and won't dry, leading to chilly, unhappy feet. I wear ski socks with everything in the winter.
My schedule has changed pretty dramatically over the past year. Going from a solid 9-6 (usually much later than 6, tbh) office routine to splitting my time between working from home and commuting to Dumbo, it's been a lot to get used to. Some days I have no commute at all, and some days I spend four hours schlepping myself between Philly and Brooklyn, hopping between Uber, Amtrak and the subway. It's a balancing act for sure and I've found that carrying the right bag with the right things in it can make or break the commute. I don't like a lot of fuss, especially in the winter when I'm also burdened with layers and a coat that immediately becomes too warm the second I step on the train. I wish I could say I've perfected it, but 8 months later I'm still making tweaks and adjustments. Sometimes I carry a backpack, sometimes this tote from Moorea Seal is all I need. Today I'm sharing some of the essentials I've been carrying with me these days, many of which are key to making a two hour train ride bearable. Hint: most of them are books... travel activities aren't just for kids! They're for professional, grown-ass adult women too!
Bag: Julia Canright Block Printed Tote Bag
On the hunt for a decent tote bag that could handle my computer on lighter commuting days, I found this great hand-printed tote on Moorea Seal and fell in love. It's roomy enough to hold my laptop and a couple of books, but not too big to also carry as a regular purse on weekends. It's great for weekends at flea markets or wandering the city, when I might pick up a couple of small things and don't want to acquire shopping bags. A Really Good Pen
Because a really good pen makes all the difference between actually using your planner or journal or whatever and living a life of disorganization. I'm liking Ink Joy pens right now. Awakening Loving-Kindness - Pema Chödrön
I've been a fan of Chödrön's uncomplicated approach to meditation for a while now, and like how portable the pocket shambhala classics are. I'm working my way up to a daily meditation practice, but for days when it doesn't happen, or I need a break from the storm, I read this.
52 Lists for Happiness - Moorea Seal
My girl Moorea's 2nd book and it's goooood. I think it's simpler in its approach than the first one and I like that it has a focus - happiness. I'm finding the lists surprisingly difficult to fill out sometimes, which is a good thing. It's making me seriously consider how I spend my time and how I can better tune in to what brings me true happiness.
Law of Attraction Planner
Can you tell I'm on a self-improvement tear this year? After ending 2016 on a lower note, I decided to make 2017 the year of being better. This planner is a whopper for sure, but I love that it's A - not dated and B - has sections for seemingly every area of life. Not just to-dos but current goals, inspiration, and long-term goals for where you hope to be.
Kindle Paperwhite
So, I clearly like to saddle myself with too many books, this little device is an attempt to at least somewhat break the habit. I was resistant to depending on yet another device, especially one that takes the place of print, but I was having trouble returning my library books on time and I also wanted to be able to spend more time reading during my commute to Brooklyn instead of staring at my laptop screen. Now that I've gotten used to it, I think it'll be great for summer and going back to my mom's, too. 'Coffee' iPhone Case
Because some things just speak your language and my language is coffee, cats and crystals and this case features all three.
Solid Amber Perfume
To me, this smells like pure nostalgia. My mom used to give me these little carved Indian soapstone boxes with solid perfume inside when I was younger and I recently rediscovered them via my favorite metaphysical bookstore here in Philly. This one is 1 note - amber - and I love how simple and warm it is. Free People Sunglasses
My favorites - I have two pairs because they literally work with every outfit. Blackhorne Black Crescent Keychain
'Yes/No' Pin Set
I picked this little pin set up on a recent trip to Pittsburgh when we popped into Juju (arguably one of the best shops in PGH and owned by Leslie, rad lady and former OG sponsor!).
Not pictured: Hand sanitizer... because the NYC subway + Amtrak + multiple Uber Pools in one day are no joke.
And always too many metrocards... because that's life
This year, for the first time in what seems like forever, it actually feels like we're getting a real, true spring. Cooler days, interspersed with temps reaching the high 70s, spring flowers lingering on the trees, and April making good on its reputation for 'April showers' (it's been so rainy!). Rather than just jumping right into summer maxi dresses and easy, breezy fabrics, I've actually been delving into spring style this year, and thinking of ways to make the transition from cold to warm weather a little easier. Here in the Northeast, I've never thought it necessary to have a full spring wardrobe, the change of seasons is usually so drastic that 'spring' is about two weeks long, going from snowy days to 80% humidity in no time flat, but, like I said, this year is different, and it's been necessary to actually think about spring style, rather than just biding my time.
Regarding the trends I've seen pop up this spring, there are two things I'm especially appreciative of:
1. Comfort is back in the form of sneakers and looser silhouettes.
and
2. With a few tweaks, it's fairly easy to make pieces currently hanging in your closet feel fresh again, either with a simple DIY or just rethinking the way you wear it.
Below are a few ways I'm updating my closet for the current weather. Perfect for the cooler days we've been having and super easy to transition with lighter pieces once the temperature inevitably skyrockets in like, five days:
Add one awesome accessory: After years of over-accessorizing, I've been paring back with just a couple of rings, a favorite bracelet, or just a lace tied around my neck. Spring and summer are a time to go minimal. You don't want to be weighed down by too much jewelry or a heavy handbag when the temperature is warm and adventure is calling. Keep it simple and let one great piece compliment and elevate the rest of your look, I recently picked up the arrowhead necklace pictured above from Moorea Seal, and love it paired with white-on-white jeans and a tee and black boots.

Embrace a new silhouette: I don't know about you, but lately I just haven't had the energy for skinny jeans. Know what I mean? The thought of wrangling myself into tight denim just isn't my thing these days, which has turned out to be a really good thing! The variety of silhouettes available lately for denim and beyond means experimenting with different shapes is easier than ever. Loose denim, until recently, reminded me a little too much of my slouchy high school self, but after purchasing a couple pairs of Levi's, I'm all in. I especially love the Wedgie Icon and 501 CT cuts, they're so flattering, so comfortable and work with both flats and heels, depending on your mood. While you're at it, grab a pair of flares, you won't be sorry. Avoid feeling like a high schooler by pairing them with low-heeled boots, a simple top, and minimal accessories.
Grab some sneakers: Holy jesus am I happy sneakers are a thing. I mean, not that they were never a thing, but their popularity means that the options on hand are seemingly endless and readily available. I just picked up a pair of checkered Vans, and can't wait to pair them with jeans now, and simple dresses and skirts later. Also, now's your chance to finally get those shell toes you always wanted in high school, but could never afford (or was that just me??). Either way, sneakers-with-everything, and my feet have never been happier.
Go off-the-shoulders: I love how an off-the-shoulder top or dress instantly adds intrigue to virtually any outfit. It's an easy look to pull off, and the interest added by bared shoulders means the rest of the outfit can be left pretty minimal. Maybe tie a bandana around your neck, maybe add a pretty choker. Whether you do or not, you'll still look great.
Fray your hems: Yes, frayed hems have been a thing for awhile now, but if you're not digging the ultra-distressed look or are just sick of a too-long hem, this might be the cheapest and most interesting way to solve a common problem. I recently hacked off the hem of a shirt that felt a bit too 'maternity' to me, and I love the flared, slightly cropped look I ended up with. Fraying the hems of your jeans also means you can get the exact length you're looking for, no guesswork.
Just a quick note: A styleboard I created -and never got around to posting- which also inspired last night's outfit- is being featured today at Camp Comfort. Many thanks to Roberta for choosing my style over the others! Have you visited Camp Comfort yet? No? Well, you must!
