Lulu's x Orchid Grey: Inspired by Debbie Harry

For the month of June I've partnered with Lulu's.com to bring you a series of four posts, each one inspired by a different 1970's female musician. Check back every Tuesday to see my interpretation of an influential artist's signature look.

Red spike bracelet & stud bracelet: bought in high school

This week's look is inspired by Debbie Harry of Blondie. Unlike Fleetwood Mac (last week's inspiration), which is a relatively new addition to my turntable from the past few years, Blondie has been a near constant since adolescence. I'm pretty sure it was in 8th grade that I first gave Blondie a listen, coming down off my 7th grade disco-phase high, Blondie was the perfect segue into slightly more punkier fare. Debbie's style was just as alluring as Blondie's sound to my young self: a well-blended combination of 70's disco sparkle and punk rock edge. Sequins, perfectly shrunken and shredded t-shirts, and that effortlessly mussed up blonde mop.

Over the Weekend

Phew...what a weekend! We packed a whole lot of stuff into two days, so much that I woke up this morning thinking to myself that the weekend should really be three days long, you know, just one extra day to sleep and laze around the house? That would have been lovely. But Instead, I'm up- begrudgingly- and off to work this morning. Boo hiss.

This weekend we saw a monster truck (awesome!), stock car races (so dusty!), and a ball game (we were in the shade!). We ate horribly awesome food that consisted mostly of hot dogs, nacho cheese, and beer. And basically just collapsed at 9 o'clock last night.

Did you have a nice weekend? I hope so!

Life Lately and Friday Favorites...

A few 'grams from the past couple of weeks (username: OrchidGrey).
Top row: Working form home, two fluffy distractions while I work from home, raspberry's allthetime
Middle Row: AM bird watching, a vintage book, cocktails and pierogies at Kelley's
Bottom row: Organic fireworks, an impulse purchase, AM shadow fun with my sweatshirt string

Currently, I am:
Reading:
After finishing Devil in the White City by Eric Larson, I've moved on to The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides. While I thought Devil in the White City contained interesting facts, it wasn't what I expected it to be. It felt as if, for the first three quarters of the book, I was reading a list of historical information, with the final quarter containing a brief climax of information about the serial killer H.H. Holmes (the real reason I picked up the book, what is it with serial killers?). As far as The Marriage Plot goes, I haven't formed an opinion yet. Right now I find the characters a little irritating an unrelatable (and I usually love reading about characters whom I cannot relate to). We'll see.

Watching:
Law and Order SVU. It's on Netflix Instant right now, and I plan on watching as much Elliot Stabler as I possibly can. We don't have cable, so I'm at the mercy of whatever is available on Netflix Instant, which I am not complaining about.

Anticipating:
The most epic weekend is upon us. And I don't typically stoop to using the word "epic". But man, this is going to be a good one! Tomorrow night we're headed to the Pittsburgh Motor Speedway to watch monster trucks, and on Sunday we're going to a Pirates game. I. AM. SO. EXCITED.
Eating:
Too much unhealthy food! It seems I work in doughnut central, and today I experienced a red velvet doughnut. Oh. Man. So good! I can only anticipate the junk food trend to continue into the weekend. What else would you expect for a monster truck rally and baseball game?

Coveting:

Play it Again

In this outfit:
Dress: Vintage via Avalon Ex. ($15)
Jacket: Forever21 ($20 old)
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell "Rumi"
Bag: Vintage Coach, thrifted ($10-ish)
Bracelet: Thrifted ($2)
Belt: J.Crew (sale- old)

What do you wear when you're in a rush, really tired, and really hungry? An old stand-by, that's what. Perhaps an outfit that you were recently reminded of- like in yesterday's post- one that's easy to throw on to get you out the door fast. Yesterday evening I attended a networking event almost immediately after work, I should have gone straight there, but my work outfit was just a little too casual for the occasion. Knowing that this outfit would work, I just threw it on and ran back out the door.

Do you wear the same outfit more than once? I do it all the time, having a few outfits on rotation is perfect for when you sleep in, or just want an easy day. Which is also why I don't typically post pictures of the same outfit twice, I'm usually wearing it because I just needed a day off from taking pictures.

Happy Thursday!

How To: Grow Out Your Bangs and Not Go Bananas

Once upon many times, I've had bangs...baby bangs, Betty Page bangs, Vampira bangs (ouch), and most recently, just long bangs...
...and just as many times as I've had them, I have grown sick and tired of them.
In February, I reached my "bangs breaking point" for this round, and decided to grow them out. In the past this process has been far from easy, but this time for some reason, it's pretty much been a breeze. I think it was just time to get rid of them, I was sick of styling them, sick of cutting them, and I was only pleased with their appearance once or twice a week. It's funny, because as soon as I pinned them back, I felt more awake and alert, it was like pulling back the curtains. While I can still look at old pictures like the one above and reminisce, I really don't miss them. If you're currently facing the arduous process of growing out your own fringe, here are a few things I've found that make the long process a little less painful...

First thing's first, when I wash my hair, I immediately pin my bangs off to the side and allow them to dry that way (I air dry my hair overnight). 85% of the time there is a bobby pin holding them down, and I always sleep with a bobby pin in so they don't get in my face and remind me of their existence.

Rule number one: pretend they don't exist, bobby pins help with this charade.

Try experimenting with different ways of pinning your fringe back, this will add variety to your routine and lessen the urge to just trim them already and be done with it. Try a center part with a messy ponytail a la Pamela Love's Fall 2012 Presentation:

Try pinning them straight back and pulling your hair into a high ponytail or bun, enjoy the sun on your forehead and the feeling of alertness that comes over you:

You can also try to work with styling your growing fringe along the way. For me, this usually results in more frustration, so I suggest you do this sparingly, as you may be tempted to snip if you get irritated. If you have the patience of a saint however, try curling them off to the side and setting with a healthy dose of hairspray:

Once they start to grow, it'll be easier to hide your bobby pins, and styling your hair as if your bangs already don't exist will become second nature (or, at least, a little easier):

On the weekends (and who am I kidding, most days), I typically wear them styled in a little twist off to the side. This is an easy style that isn't ruined if I get annoyed and throw my hair up in a bun halfway through the day (this usually happens):

Play around with how you part your hair. Sweeping some length over your fringe easily conceals the shorter pieces (and makes you feel- secretly- like Jessica Rabbit):
I also recommend playing around with different braiding techniques. I'm actually not doing this too much myself this go-round, but braids came in super handy when I was growing out a set of fringe a couple of years ago.

If you get tempted to grab the scissors- and you will, I can almost guarantee it- don't do it. Look at pictures of fringe-less ladies on Pinterest, think of how greasy bangs get so easily.

Essentially: remind yourself constantly of why you're growing them out.

The process is a slow one, for everyone, but if you learn how to wrangle them early on, it's easy enough to forget they even existed.

Feel free to share tips of your own for growing out your bangs in the comments section!

Lulu's x Orchid Grey: Inspired By Stevie Nicks

For the month of June I've partnered with Lulu's.com to bring you a series of four posts, each one inspired by a different 1970's female musician. Check back every Tuesday to see my interpretation of an influential artist's signature look.

Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac on Grooveshark
Tusk by Fleetwood Mac on Grooveshark

In this Outfit:
Dress, Shawl, Wedges, Necklace, Bracelet courtesy of Lulu's
Leather vest: Vintage (swapped)

This week's look is inspired by Stevie Nicks. I'm pretty sure that my younger self would be appalled by how much I've come to love Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks, but man, I can't help it. Not only do I find myself listening to either Tusk or Rumors almost every morning on my way to work, but if I ever need inspiration for styling long layers, this is the woman whose style I turn to. Pile on the scarves, shawls, silks, tapestry, and lace, and you'll have your Stevie look. Extra credit if you add a top hat and feathers.

Are you inspired by a particular musician or band? I'd love to know!

Over the Weekend: (Re)Learning to Relax

Coffee. Baby yard bunnies. Lounging with cats. I'm not sure if this weekend could have been more perfect. I have a tendency to hit the ground running on days off, and not stop moving until the end of the day, at which point I've successfully run myself ragged. This productivity can be good at times, but it can also leave me feeling as if I didn't even have a weekend by the time Monday morning rolls around. I've been making the effort to get out of the house early and not give myself enough time to start obsessing over all that could be done in our apartment (which, honestly isn't much). So I make sure to go to the gym, grab a coffee and work on emails and blog stuff for a couple of hours on Saturdays, which is enough to leave me feeling energized for the rest of the day, and accomplished enough so I am able to cut myself a break for the remainder of the weekend.

This weekend was completely successful on the relaxation front. I grabbed a new book to read from the library (The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides), took advantage of the sun before the rain came, went out for cocktails with Chris, and started in on the long process of organizing my email inbox (a nightmare). I also finally made good on one of my new years resolutions and bought myself a racing swimsuit and started swimming, I'm feeling really good about this. How was your weekend?

(my Leah Goren IPhone case was kindly provided by Iconemesis, review to come!)

ps- there is one of the largest raptors I have ever seen sitting on top of that building. Not sure if it was a hawk, falcon, or something else, but it was incredible!
