Philadelphia > NYC

 photo image 10_zpsthtuslv8.jpeg

In case you missed it -- and you probably did because other than on Instagram, I haven't mentioned much -- I have a new job, and a sorta-not-really new city. (!!!) I started my new chapter a few weeks ago when I joined the brand marketing team at Etsy. A huge decision, but one I'm so excited about, for so many reasons. A big one being that I'll eventually be a remote employee working from home, wherever home may be. As someone who has relocated for every step of my career thus far, from Maine to Massachusetts to Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, that's huge. But, the operative word back there is eventually. For the next month or so, I'm commuting a few days at a time from Philly to NYC, and living out of a hotel room while I get settled with my new team and new company (the whole thing reminds me so much of my days as an admissions counselor, minus the embarrassing amount of Panera and car karaoke).

As you might imagine, the shakeup in my schedule has been a whirlwind, one part awesome, one part exhausting. I love the fact that my days are unpredictable, that I've shaken off the home-car-office-gym-home schedule, what I don't love so much is dragging a roller case through the NYC subway system (but man, I think I may have found a great substitute for the gym!). But when I find myself cursing that suitcase and missing home (and I do miss home and the husband and cat therein... a lot), I have to remind myself what unique experience this is. Like a lot of kids who grew up in the country, when I was younger I imagined myself running off to New York as soon as I was old enough. Before I discovered photography, I had dreams of being a fashion designer, and that's just where you went. To New York. Right? Of course -- and obviously -- priorities changed, and as I got older, my desire to live in the city lessened and lessened, but I love that I get to experience it now on a more regular basis and in more digestible amounts of time... and then come home to Philly, a city that now seems so much quieter and spacious compared to the fray and frenetics of NYC. Until I make the jump to being full-time remote, I'm taking advantage. Seeing as many friends as I can, and exploring as much as possible in the hours before and after work, and trying to figure out the best commuter situation in the process. Two hours, three states, two trains and an Uber... sneakers and a backpack (and a good book) are necessary not-so-evils. I've been living in my Allbirds, quite possibly the world's most comfortable sneakers that go with pretty much everything, and picked up a simple leather backpack when I learned I got the job. Next up? A hard-case roller suitcase, or at least some kind of quality luggage. My Wal-Mart bargain of 10 years ago is not holding up (15???? oh my god it was 15 years ago....).

Do you have a crazy long commute? Any recommendations? Have a suitcase you like? Help!

PS - You'll still be able to find me on the Free People blog and The Style Line, where I'll be staying on as a contributing writer :)

The Myth of Work/Life Balance

 photo Photo20Apr20242062004200920PM_zps8ew5s4we.jpg
Pictured: Mon Cahier planner + 'Leigh' card holder from Moorea Seal

A few years ago, when I was working as a copy writer at ModCloth, a coworker of mine shared something that changed my entire perspective on the idea of “work/life balance”. Up until that point, I had been on a never-ending quest to strike the perfect balance between my home and work life. After a soul-crushing stint as a visual merchandiser at American Apparel, and then working multiple jobs at a time between 2010 and 2011 (at one point I had four, plus a volunteer position), I wanted my life back. I wanted to find balance. But somehow, it continued to elude me. In my brain I pictured scales, like the scales of freakin' justice, always a little off balance. Things began to feel slightly more even when I made the move to Pittsburgh in 2011, trading in the three jobs I was working at the time for the myth of the 9 to 5. Suddenly, with just one schedule to contend with, I felt like I had time again. I even gave a few talks on the subject of finding work/life balance. Except there was one glaring problem: in my heart, I still felt as though I was constantly running myself ragged. Turns out, when you write for a living, and you write for your blog, and you take photos for a living, and you take photos for your blog, it’s really, really easy to suddenly find yourself completely burned out and exhausted, with no balance in sight. And something tells me the same rings true for every. other. job. out there.

 photo Photo20Apr20242062004203920PM_zpstnqpk00y.jpg

So, back to Molly, my coworker at ModCloth. At some point she gave a sort of mini talk (I think? Could have just been her talking over her computer at me...) on the myth of work/life balance. And it completely shifted the way I approached these things in my life. To paraphrase (and probably butcher): “There is no balance, there is only fit.”

“There is no balance, there is only fit.”

The idea being, that you fit your work and your life together. You fit the things you care about into your life because you care about them, while being conscious of the fact that work often overlaps. That work part, it's best to accept it and move on. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces often aren’t symmetrical. They’re funny looking and oddly shaped. One piece extends into another and vice versa. This was a radical shift in the way I visualized my time (if you can't tell by now, I'm a visual person), and I’m so thankful to have learned this before moving to Philly for my next job. Because, despite the fact that I had this new depth of knowledge to draw from, I was still shit at putting it to practice. Because while fit is important, boundaries are as well.

So, where is all this coming from? Last month, Jen asked for tips on how I manage work/life/self care. And I have to say, my knee jerk answer would be, “very, very carefully."

 photo 208a7bd1-b07b-47ee-a680-301001600ca9_zpscuv4brsl.jpg

The truth is, in my early days at FP, I ran myself just as ragged. A new job with new demands and lessons learned from my time at MC swimming through my head meant that I was often up well past midnight working, answering emails, and fretting over all that had to be done. I have a tendency to let past failures haunt me, which means I push myself hard to prove to myself that I can. But one look at photos of myself from that time and it’s easy to see just how exhausted I’d become. The bags under my eyes were darker than ever, and I was puffy from lack of sleep and eating things I normally steer clear from. I’m not sure when the turning point came, but at a certain point I had to loosen the reigns a little or else I was going to fall right off the (figurative) cliff. It was baby steps at first – turning my email notifications on my phone to vibrate, rather than a bell. Not checking email after 11 pm. Making time at the gym a priority again. And finally, admitting to myself that I had to cut back on the number of times per week I was posting on this blog. The changes were subtle at first, but over a year later, it's made an enormous difference in my quality of life.

 photo Photo20Apr20242062008205320PM_zpsavj1qsi5.jpg

Now, I realize things vary from person to person and job to job. but over time I've continued to shift and adjust my time and how I use it. Work is (obviously) still a huge and very important part of my life (I think that's pretty obvious), but I've been slowly learning how to make time for what's important to me and to make time for myself.

A few more things that have helped me strike some sort of equilibrium (notice how I'm not using the word balance)...

Email notifications went from vibrate to none at all because I’ve completely removed email from my phone. A brazen move for sure, and to be clear, I can still check it on the internet browser on my phone (and I do, at specific times), but I no longer have those unread messages staring me in the face and new message dings keeping me up at all hours. I’m thankful to have an amazing editor and coworkers who don’t shy away from texting  if something is urgent. This has, by far, made the largest difference in my stress levels. While I understand having your email on your phone is a necessity for some people, if you’re feeling stressed, ask yourself if it’s really, truly necessary and try taking a break from it for awhile, even just a few days.

If I have to work on the weekend, I get up early and get it out of the way first thing. I write best in the early morning anyway, and getting it out of the way means I don't have to think about for the remainder of Saturday and Sunday.

Conversely, sometimes it's just worth it to stay late at the office on a Friday night to get it out of the way and just get it done.

I am conscious about making time for myself. Rather than pushing aside the things that make me feel human -- reading, baking, getting outside, painting my nails -- I have to constantly remind myself to just do it. To slow down and breathe and make times for the things outside of blogging and work and blogging for work.

Not everything has to be a blog post. I picked up an art book recently, the cover emblazoned with the phrase "Today is a blog post waiting to be written" and I use it as a sort of anti-mantra. In the constant search for content for work, it's very, very easy to fall down the rabbit hole of constantly taking photos and constantly thinking of copy. I intentionally leave my camera at home sometimes and often go light on social media, especially after work and on the weekends. Life is there, live it.

How about you? How do you find time in your life to do everything you do?

NYC for Less Than a Day

In this outfit:
Coat: Gentle Fawn from ModCloth
Blazer: Thrifted ($3)
Stole: Family antique/ Great-Grandmother's
Sweater top: Vintage/ Allen Company ($19)
Jeans: Madewell (sale 2011)
Loafers: Thrifted/ Bass ($3)
Bag: Thrifted/ Coach ($5)

Where I wore it: To New York

Yesterday was a strange one. I've never flown to a destination and then back home in the same day, but that is exactly what a coworker and I did. We had a meeting in the city for work, so we woke up not-so-bright and early (4 AM), missed our first flight, and were in New York by 10am. After our meeting there was just enough time to make a whirlwind trip to Beacon's Closet, before jumping back in a cab and heading back to LaGuardia to catch our flight home. I was back in Pittsburgh having dinner with Chris by 8:15pm.

Since we weren't staying in the city, I wanted to travel as light as possible. Admittedly, I didn't need the coat- it was pretty warm out- but the rest of this outfit worked out well. No jewelry and slip-on loafers made going through security a breeze, and my bag was large enough to stuff my camera inside. And throwing my hair up into a bun is pretty much all I can be asked to muster at 4 AM. It was by far the easiest travel day I've ever experienced, but yes, quite a whirlwind.

PS- my pictures are huge, I know. Photobucket is messing with me, I'm trying to figure it out.

[EDIT] Emily just asked me a great question: "... I don't have any ethical qualms about vintage fur but I have always felt a little nervous or self-conscious about wearing them out and about - has a stranger ever given you a hard time about wearing fur? How did/would you handle it?"

My answer: No one- stranger or otherwise- has ever given me a hard time about this antique stole. I should be clear that I do not in any way endorse the production of NEW fur. However, I have thrifted a couple vintage fur hats, and this particular piece belonged to my great grandmother, it already exists in the world, and it's something that I've had and cherished since I was a child playing dress-up. If someone were to ask me about it, or give me a hard time, I would explain this story to them and hope that they would understand. But, it's also impossible to make everyone happy, and I think that's an important thing to keep in mind.

June 6, 2011: Chambray, Creme, Multi

Dress: J.Crew sale ($15)
Cardigan: J.Crew outlet ($10)
Bracelet: swapped
Necklace: Madewell sale ($7)
Bag: Brimfield flea ($30)
As I mentioned on Friday, I start a new job today: I am extremely excited to announce that today is my first day as a Brand Ambassador for
The Swapaholics! I'm SO excited to get started! Basically I'll be repping the brand in all aspects, from doing guest posts on the Swapaholics blog to building community and readership (among many other things). I can't even explain how excited I am to be doing this, if we were talking in real life, I would be jumping around and talking gibberish.

Someone mentioned -correctly- in Friday's post that it seems like I've been jumping from job to job a lot, and yes, in the past year I have (I've had three different jobs since last September: one I'm keeping (the coffee shop), one was a placeholder (my retail job), and the other was the worst decision ever (AA)). June 18th will be the one year anniversary of when I left my job as a College Admissions Counselor to pursue other things (a job I held for 3 years), and looking back I was definitely naive to think I could find a perfect fit right away, finding the perfect fit takes time, patience, and extremely hard work. In an economy such as ours, it's easy to stay in a job just because you have it, but when that job is making you absolutely miserable, I don't think it's worth it. That is probably the exact opposite advice of all of our mothers and fathers, but I've been happier in this past unsteady year than I was in all of the secure ones. I don't want to come off as defensive, because the comment definitely wasn't mean (it was actually very nice, thank you), but it made me realize that maybe I should address the job changes I've gone through. I think there are a lot of people going through a similar situation, considering how many people I know who are having a hard time finding a job or have been laid off recently.
Ok, so on a different point, this is what I'm wearing! I bought this dress after hemming and hawing over it for the past few months, watching it sit in the sale section. The shape is definitely different than what I usually gravitate towards, but I loved the ruffles and it is super comfortable. Since I'm going into the office today, I added a cardigan and my favorite *sensible* shoes. To break up the blue and creme color scheme- which I seem to be wearing a lot of lately- i added a colorful swapped bracelet and my vintage bag. I didn't want to be too office-y because I'm going out tonight to meet Veronika from Tick Tock Vintage and the Delightful Dozen! I can't wait!

Anyways, if you have any questions for me, feel free to ask! and wish me luck, I'm off to work! xo

I Am (Clearly) Extremely Excited

Shirt: Gap (35.00)
Suede Skirt: Thrifted (2.99)
Belt: Vintage via Thrift (1.00)
Necklace: H&M (9.90)
Shoes: MIA via Charity Shop (2.00)
Tights: TjMaxx (4.99)
You might be asking yourself "why is this girl leaping like an idiot?", well I'll tell you: at approximately 11:06 am this morning my travel season for work officially ended. This is huge. It ENDED. Am I over- reacting? It may seem like it, but in the past two and a half months I have driven over 9,000 miles, visited around 60 different high schools, talked to (I'm sure) thousands of high school kids, and have risen for work almost daily at the ungodly hour of 5:00 am. So yes, I think I am allowed to take pictures in a parking lot of myself jumping around like a five year old hopped-up on Pixie Stix and then post said photos on the internet. Yay! So I'm really happy, we've covered that.

Now, my outfit. I have a definite thing for vintage leather skirts. Whether they be suede, nubuck, or leather, I love the high waisted fit and great texture. I found this suede skirt at a Salvation Army in Raymond, Maine which- for those of you who don't know your Maine geography- is out in the middle of nowhere. I still hold to the belief that the best thrift stores are either at churches or in the boonies! My belt is one of my favorites, I love the gold owls! So, if you're ever in Maine and need some thrift recommendations, let me know!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Daily Style...

Maine is always on my mind...
Dress: American Apparel (49.00)
Scarf: Unknown... super old, probably free.
Belt: Gift from friend (thanks, Claudia!)
Tights: Vera Wang for Kohl's (7.00)
Boots: Jeffrey Campbell (39.00 sale)
I'm really digging this scarf look lately, it adds pattern and interest almost like jewelry would, but adds an unexpected twist. I wore this outfit up to Portland, Maine today to visit a high school for work, I wasn't expecting the day to go well because I left later than I wanted too, but everything ended up working out perfectly! I love days like today, and they sure have been few and far between lately!

I had two presentations scheduled for this school and about two hours in between them, it turns out that this high school is only a few blocks away from where my late Grandmother used to live, so I decided to take a drive by her house and around the neighborhood. It was kind of neat to see all the houses I remembered from when I was a little kid (I don't think I had been in her neighborhood since I was 14 or 15), and also to see that the new owners of her house hadn't changed much about it. Afterwards I made a quick stop at the Salvation Army that's down the street, I have such good memories of this area from when I was younger! My mom's stylish friend once took me to this Salvation Army when I was 12 (?), and I remember going there also as a teenager once I got my license. Both of my parents grew up in Portland and would always tell me about their memories of certain areas when we would drive through. Being in Portland always makes me miss Maine a lot, it's such a nice city!

To add to my good day, when I returned to my office this afternoon, I found out that my visit for tomorrow cancelled which means that I can get all of my paperwork done before I go to Philadelphia this weekend and before Thanksgiving break... and I also don't have to wake up at 5:00 am again! Yay!

Daily Style...

Top: J.Crew (20.00? really old)
Skirt: Target (16.00)
Belt: Thrift (1.00)
Tights: TjMaxx (4.99)
Shoes: Target (6.99 sale)
Bracelet: Gift
Picture Taker: Chris
I look exhausted here, to tell you the truth I haven't been feeling that great for the past couple of days, and it's taken a lot of effort to do even the most mundane things- all I want to do is curl up on the couch. This outfit is perfect for the kind of day where I just want to be comfortable but have to work (like today): the skirt has an elastic waist and this cotton shirt is one of my favorites. I'll probably wear this again this weekend for my work-trip to Philadelphia for National Portfolio Day. Wow, I'm really struggling with things to say here, maybe that's the downside of blogging in the morning? In any case, happy Tuesday!

Daily Style...

Dress: Forever 21 (7.00 sale)
Scarf: hand-me-down from Mom
Belt: hand-me-down from friend
Tights: TjMaxx (4.99)
Shoes: Tag Sale (1.00)
Bag: thrifted vintage Cole Haan (2.00)
After wearing pretty much the same thing all weekend, it was nice to actually wear something different. I remember coveting this scarf of my mothers as a child, always using it to play dress up. After less than 24 hours at home, I'm now in Fishkill, New York. I was supposed to be here for two straight weeks, but after being home and then leaving so abruptly, I decided to return for the weekend. Even though traveling is part of my job, being away so often makes me feel like a bad girlfriend and a bad cat-mama. Chris and I did get to go to breakfast this morning, it was nice to be able to spend at least a little time together.
Also, a big thank you to Fashion Therapist and Marta Castellanos for the blog awards! Since both awards have basically the same rules, I've combined them. So, seven random things about me:
1. I love rockabilly and psychobilly music.
2. I have a pretty severe fear of flying.
3. I love watching large flocks of small birds.
4. I love to bake pies.
5. When I'm on the road for work, I love watching trashy T.V. (right now I'm watching "The Secret Lives of Women on WE).
6. I listen to Queen when I clean my house.
7. I have arthritis in both of my knees.

Now it's your turn! Tell me something about yourself!

I think we're just going to have to be secretly in love with each other and leave it at that, Richie.

Oh, What a rainy day!
Vintage Plaid Shirt: Thrift (1.00)
Vintage Suede Skirt: Thrift (3.00)
Shoes: Target (6.00 sale)
Tights: from Adria (free)
Necklaces: both H&M (both about 9.00)
pictures by Chris
Today, another round robin high school fair, except this time there were four schools. I'm exhausted- especially after sitting in Boston traffic for two hours on the way home. Luckily for me, it's pouring outside so I didn't feel the least bit guilty for coming home and crawling back into bed. This is an outfit that I picked out ahead of time this past weekend, which made getting dressed at 5 am so much easier! The shirt I picked up at a Salvation army in Fitchburg last week and the skirt is from one of my trips to Maine (I think I found it at a Salvation Army in Raymond?). The shirt has that perfect worn-in pre-loved feeling! Now, the image below is in honor of ChicFaced's comment from my last post. I've been posting costumes from halloween past, and the one below is from about four years ago when my friend Adria and I went as Margot and Ritchie Tenenbaum:
Adria is far more convincing than I (note her hand drawn striped shirt- such commitment), and I have no idea why I'm wearing pantyhose, but we had a good time reciting lines from the movie all night. As you may come to realize, most of my costumes are thrown together last minute. This one is no different. I think I decided to be Margot as I was walking to Adria's house. Also, on a side note: that terrible celestial poster in the background does not belong to either of us.

Daily Style: Seven Minutes is Far From Heaven

Oh, Wow. One of those days. I Tell ya.
Necklace: Forever 21 (5.99)
Cardigan: H&M (16.00)
Dress (belt included): H&M (24.00)
Tights: Target (5.00)
Shoes: Target (sale 6.99)
Today started out on a very low note. I awoke feeling abnormally well rested, "this is too good to be true" I thought. It was too good to be true, I was so well rested because it was 6:53! I needed to leave for today's college fair in seven minutes! Somehow the stars aligned and this outfit emerged from the mountainous pile on my floor. What's this? I actually feel like I look nice today?! Yes! Despite forgoing all makeup, save for a swipe or two of mascara, I'm feeling good. Finally. I wish I could say that this college fair was worth scrambling for, but it wasn't. Just a lot of standing around and repeating "no, we don't offer a nursing degree, we're a fine arts college, see, it says that right there on my sign." Work has been stressful lately, I'm counting down the days until the end of my travel season in December. I can't wait! Did I mention it snowed the other day?
Jen, from JenLovesKev is wearing the same tights today! Yeah Target!

Isn't Zephyr so sweet? Sorry for the low-rez images, it's mega windy today and I was a little concerned about my tripod getting knocked over. Plus, I have no idea where my remote is. Somewhere in my incredibly messy house I'd imagine! I also really need to get better at taking pictures indoors, especially with Winter on the horizon. Our apartment has terrible lighting. I know I've been a bad blogger lately, and all I can say is that this will most likely continue until my travel season is over in November, so please bear with me! My schedule is crazy! This morning I took part in The College's first admissions open house of the season. This meant dragging myself out of bed at 7am (ouch) and finding something decent on my floor. I think I did pretty well, except for the fact that my name tag has disappeared under the driver's seat in my car! The worst part of the travel season is the fact that my typical 9 to 5 work week goes completely haywire, some days I work from 5am till 8pm and some days for just a few hours. I never know what to expect.

The Never Ending Work Week: Beverly to Hartford to Beverly

I don't usually post on weekends, but since I was up and getting ready for work anyway, I figured I would. Sorry for the craptacular photos, I woke up to torrential downpours this morning which made taking nice pictures pretty impossible (we have a pretty extreme low light situation in our apartment).

As I mentioned yesterday and the day before, I found some pretty prime thrift finds during my time in Maine. Below is by far the best:

A grey fleece Diane Von Furstenburg poncho (6.00). I'm thinking I'll wear it with a flowy top and really tall platform boots. It's a little gigantic, but I think it works. Kind of like a fashion-snuggie. har har. I'll be slowly posting my other treasures as I wear them this next week. Rain tomorrow again. Also tomorrow: more work. sad.
