Primary

In this outfit:
Top: Thrifted ($5)
Skirt: Vintage/ Modern Millies ($18 c.2008)
Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell ($50 sale c.2009)
Bracelet c/o Lulu's

Where I wore it: To the office!

You know that supposed "rule" about cleaning out your closet that goes something like "if you haven't worn it in 6 months, get rid of it"? Well, I don't believe in that rule, and this skirt is my argument. The last time I wore this skirt was back in 2008, and it completely stumped me for some reason. I bought it because it reminded me of what a 70's art teacher would wear and I think I wore it for the first time with a bright yellow t-shirt, and looked and felt pretty awful about it. Anyways, all these years later, it works much better with a simple white top. I think they key is having basics, something that was actually lacking from my closet until very recently.

This is another one of my Malia of Honolulu skirts, the first one. I love the strawberry print and that it has pockets. And yes, whenever I wear it I can't help but feel like a 70's art teacher.

I guess the moral of this story is that if you have something that's been sitting in the back of your closet for years, pull it out and try looking at it with new, simplified eyes.

Adorbs, love the strawberry print!

I hate that rule, too. I have stuff in my closet from high school and a few years ago, and I've been recently trying to pare it down but never go with the "how long ago did I wear it last" question--also because I can never keep track. ;) When you try to mix up your style and wardrobe like us trendy folks do.. =), you so often want something different! So, quality and style are more important sometimes than frequency of wear!

I completely agree, the majority of the items that have stood the test of time in my closet are either vintage, thrifted, or basics from J.Crew. When I got my first professional job I bought a bunch of stuff from H&M and their ilk, and no longer have or wear any of it. I think they key is quality and uniqueness :)

If I followed that rule, I would not really have anything left in my closet. I leave something for a year, then come back and restyle it. We need a break from some pieces, but we are ever faithful and we always come back to them.
Or we find out it no longer fits.

Awwww I remember that skirt! I love that you want to dress like an art teacher from the 70s. Your freckles are cute.

Love it! And I need those shoes! I don't go by that rule either. My rule is do I like it anymore. I pull stuff out and can't believe I even bought it recently and other things that I've had for years, may not have worn for awhile but absolutely adore.

Agreed, so not into that rule, at all. I'm a closet hoarder and that's just how I like it! ;) I honestly never know when I'll re-wear a piece but eventually I always do.

And your skirt + overall outfit is so beautiful. I'm loving how you're embracing simplicity this summer - gorg!! Plus love the red JC's, I have them in cognac & wish I had them in every colour. Happy almost Friday! xo veronika

Awesome outfit! I am so in love with that bracelet...very cool!
And I have a few items of clothing from high school(which was 10 years ago!) that I just can't part with and find myself wearing every now and again.

I LOVE your skirt! I totally disagree with that rule too, there are lots of times I pull something out of the closet archives and fall in love with it again. But... it does make for a stuffed closet :) Love your outfit!

I'm totally with you on the rule breaking front. Some of my favorite pieces are beautiful vintage dresses that are certainly not meant to be worn willy-nilly. They might only get to shine one night of year, but they are totally worth it. I'm also slowing starting to get more basic pieces into my wardrobe. I'm mostly drawn to prints and patterns which don't lend themselves to much versatility. You look great and I'm glad you held on to such a fun skirt. Those shoes are killing it too. Hot!
