May 9, 2011: Blue, Silver, Black

Dress: Swapped
Belt: Swapped
Shoes: F21 ($13)
Silver bracelet: Vintage (really old)
Leather spike cuff: Old (high school)
Happy monday! How was your weekend? Mine was fine, I worked most of saturday and sunday seemed way too short. How is it that sunday flies by? It's my favorite day of the week, but it seems to only be a few hours long.

Last night Chris and I went to a vintage style cocktail party hosted by a friend. I somehow managed to completely miss the fact that it was a 50's theme however, and went with more of a Boogie Nights look. Oh well, it was worth it. I've been savng this dress for a warmer day, it's completely unlined and somewhat see through, but I love it. I got it at one of the past Swaps, and I think it used to belong to Sami of A Glimpse of Glamour. But if you follow me on Twitter, you may know that someone with a taste for destruction got his little claws on it. I didn't notice until we got in the car that the right side was pretty shredded, another reason why pleats are so great. Also, anyone have experience with those claw caps? Do they make your cats miserable? I'm pretty sick of finding shredded clothing and threadbare furniture.
Are we friends on Twitter yet? How about Facebook?

I love the pleats - and the dress is an amazing color on you! I didn't notice the shredding at all in the pictures.

I love that electric shade of blue!

As for cats - do you have a scratching post for them? Mine used to be pretty destructive, but ever since I got a scratching post for him (I first had a cardboard one like this, but it turned out to be way too messy, so switched to a carpet one) and sprayed him with water whenever he was scratching anywhere else, he has contained his destructive behaviour to his designated post.

We used Soft Paws when Misha was little, they worked great, but then she learned to bite instead...luckily she is a cuddly adult kitty now :)

Ohhhh, that dress. I love it! And I seem to remember seeing it on Sami, too!

Our cat tends to just stick to her scratching post after we saw her scratching the corners of our (temptingly nubbly) couch. We got her one of those tall ones and stuck it next to the couch and tempted her with lots of treats the first time. Now she scratches it constantly: I wonder if it's therapeutic because she sure looks blissed out. And no more couch scratching! Of course, now she's taking to pawing/and scratching at the books on my bedside table at 4 AM...

Thanks for the advice RK and Cassie! We have a few designated scratching posts for them but they seem to prefer drive by scratchings (they'll run up, scratch the couch/chair/anything else, and run so fast we don't know what hit us!

Fab dress! Beautiful swingy-ness. My cat problem mostly consist of cat fur on pants and a constant loss of bobby pins and hair ties. Oh, and chapsticks. Somewhere in my apartment there must be a massive collection, since Truman and Clinton are forever running off with them.

What a gorgeous dress, the skirt is especially beautiful xoxo

that is a bummer about the skirt! i brought home a kitty one summer that clawed up my parents almost-new leather couch. they have yet to forgive me for that one! :(

I can't believe you got that dress and belt at swaps!

My cats like to dig their claws into our legs to get a really good stretch (seriously, the use us to stretch), so I try to trim their claws regularly. They don't mind too much and we always reward them with treats once we finish clipping. What we really need is a good old-fashioned scratching post, I think.

You look stunning in that colour and shape! And yeah, my cat always used to do shock and awe style scratching; she particularly liked my mom's expensive chair back in the day...

absolutely gorgeous! that shade of blue looks positively wonderful on you :)

I love this look, the blue is so striking!

Also, the cat caps are not terrible, I put some on my cat and he acts agitated at first and then just accepts the fact.

Definitely worth a try.

Great pleats and colors on the dress. Sorry to hear about your cat scratch fever. If it makes you feel any better, I don't have cats, but I have three little kids who like to give me big hugs with chocolate ice cream on their faces.

Oo a vintage style cocktail party sounds like so much fun! even though you weren't exactly 50s, I think you look fabulous! That dress is really amazing- the color, the pleats, the length- everything. You always have great accessories too!

I love that dress, and the color.. so pretty!

My boyfriend and I just put "Kitty Caps" on our cat over the weekend. We tried the brand "Soft Paws" when she was a kitten and they worked pretty well, but this time the new brand I mentioned above seems to work better and they were easier to put on. I thought it would be harder considering she hasn't had them on in a couple years but it wasn't too terrible. She isn't bothered by them either. Hope that helps!

claw caps...may not be a good idea. i know three cats that have used them. one was a super chill cat, and did not care at all about them, and walked funny with them at first. the other two were bad. one chewed at his feet so bad that his feet bled and they had to declaw him. the other had one of the caps caught in a curtain and she freaked out and hurt her paw...she was sore and limped around for a week.

Hi Julie! I've been reading your blog for a long time, but I've never commented on a post before! You look lovely as always! I wanted to comment to tell you about my experience with the cat scratching thing. I recently purchased Soft Paws, the vinyl nail caps that prevent feline destruction, and I LOVE THEM. They really work! My cat resisted at first, but they're humane, non-toxic, and effective, and she seems to have gotten used to them now. One or two fall off every now and again, but they're easy to replace and they're not harmful if swallowed. I'd highly recommend them!

I just pit soft paws on my 2 kitties about 3 weeks ago, and it has been GREAT! No more shredded stuff. Its important to keep the cats away from their nails for 5ish minutes after you apply, so if you don't think you can hold your cat for that long I'd pass. The first time I put them on I let them go way to early and they just bit the caps off before the glue set. A kittle cuddling after the second application, and they work great!

What a gorgeous cocktail dress. You look super glamorous. I love it!
I have two cats and a dog, my cats don't rip up my clothes but they do leave their little hairs all over everything. It drives me up the wall!

My cats shredded one of my favorite dresses too. I was so upset!

The soft paws work really well. They're kind of a pain to put on, but they're worth it. Your cats will be really confused for a while when they try and claw things and see it doesn't work. Other than that, they don't seem to mind.

Hi Julie,

We tried soft paws on both our cats one was in his "teen" years and the other was kitten, both of them hate having them put on. They are tough to get on in the first place and our cats sat amd licked their paws until they fell off. Now one of our cats has a nasty nail bitting habit and doesn't know when to stop bitting his paws. We used double sided tape and foil on our furniture corners until they learned to give up!

I swear Julie, you can pull of ANYTHING! I don't know if it's your figure or your confidence (both), but you could wear a potato sack and look beautiful. If I wore that dress, I would look like a frumpy old lady! Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, but it takes guts to wear and you have then!
