In which I go off on a tangent not really having to do with this outfit...

Dress: F21 ($19 ?)
Blazer: Thrift ($3)
Shoes: Thrift ($10)
Bag: Thrift ($10)
Necklace: F21 ($9)
Sunnies: Fred Flare ($11)
Belt: J.Crew Outlet ($19)
It's funny how I went from wearing three things yesterday to seven today, haha. I typically do not like to post with the same background on two consecutive days, but I also think it's really interesting how a space or place can be so changed by the time of day or the weather. Yesterday was more overcast, but today the sun was casting crazy shadows through the fire escape grating, making long diagonal stripes across the wall. I love this mural, it's on the side of the cinema in my town.

This outfit is kind of one that I just threw together and don't really have much to say about! I like this blazer but feel like I can't wear flats with something that has such a strong shoulder, my espadrilles fix that problem! I like the dark blue with the yellow linen dress, one of my favorite purchases from Forever 21 to date. Is it just me or is F21 getting cheesier lately? How do you feel about "Fast Fashion" stores like F21 and H&M? I certainly have quite a bit of clothing from both, but lately I've been extremely dissatisfied with what they have to offer and would rather just purchase quality clothing on sale or just go thrifting (obvs the more preferred choice). I think it's a sign of getting older, not wanting to spend any time in malls and just wanting to get in and get out, or maybe I'm just a grumpy old woman stuck in a 26 year olds body!
On a lighter note, I ordered this book today, I'm so excited to receive it! I'm looking forward to having more time to read and do research!
Happy Thursday!

Oh and PS- a couple of people asked in my last post what happened to my leg, I wish I had some sort of cool story, but the truth is I cut myself shaving. I'm extremely clumsy. Thank you for the concern!

That dress is the perfect color! I'm on the fence about fast fashion stores. I think they're okay for trendier purchases, but I never shop there for things that I'm hoping to get a lot of use out of.

I'm very particular about what I buy in those stores. They are great for cheap, fun accessories and some basics. You have to be careful about the fabrics you wear from those stores.

I would rather wait for a good sale and/or go to the outlets. I absolutely LOVE Banana Republic Outlet, Coach Outlet, and Macy's clearance. I'm a master at sale shopping. There is no better high than finding good quality clothing at good prices :-)

I used to LOOOOVE F21/H&M - now I can hardly stand the places - I might pass through to see if anything sticks out at H&M, but F21 gives me a headache - sometimes I'll buy some things from their love21 line online (that's their more "modest" line - aka not 25" long shirts passing as dresses). So either I agree, or I'm a 23 year old in an old woman's body!

I had the same thought about Forever 21 on my last trip. I just got frustrated with the poor quality of everything that I picked up, and overwhelmed by the sheer size of the store. So much junk! Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of pieces from the store but even with their prices starting low I will rarely buy something not on sale...it's just not worth it for as many times as you will likely be able to wear the item.

i love the yellow against the navy blue, too! great outfit! aah, i want ur espadrilles lol im definitely a fan of f21 and h&m, although i totally feel ya. i go through phases where i would rather save up for a quality designer item or better yet, look for pieces at HIGHLY discounted prices:) have a great day!

Yes totally know what you mean. I hate going to big supersized stores. I get really overwhelmed, especially with all the trends they just throw at you. I'd much rather go to a nice little boutique that I know has good taste and be satisfied everytime. Not only with the styles but also with the quailty.

In other news, I like the yellow/navy combo. Very summer.

I used to shop at h&m all the time, but have preferred thrifting in the last couple years because you can find better quality items for less than what you pay at fast fashion stores. I think f21 and h&m are good for cheap basics, like white tees, though.

I love your outfit and how it matches the background of your photos! Lovely :)

I shop at Forever 21 a lot, a big majority of my wardrobe comes from clothes from them, but its usually more modest pieces. The quality is lousy, but I suppose that's what you get for the price, right?
I'm trying to branch out and find better quality things but its hard when you're on a very small budget...

Great outfit! :) I think that blazers add instant cool to any outfit!

Super fly. That background is so cool. I particularly love the lighting and shadows.

Forever21 really has gotten SO much worse! Maybe it does have to do with getting older? But I used to feel like even though the quality wasn't that great, the "style" still was, even though the "style" was generally copied from higher end designers and lines. But I haven't found much that I've liked there in the last few months.

H&M, on the other hand, I can do some SERIOUS damage there! ha :) I think they're great for basics. They have these dresses in 1000 colors for 7.90 and 12.90 right now that are perfect for summer. Plus I love their accessories.

Love this outfit though. Espadrilles and blazer work so well together, much better than I ever would have though.

I like Forever 21 in theory but I haven't bought anything from there in ages because every time I go in their entire stock is... kind of hideous, actually. Plus, there's the quality issue. These days I want to buy things that will actually last. That blazer looks really nice though—I love the sleeves!

But H&M? I've only been there once, and I bought two dresses that I absolutely adore! There's going to be one in Portland opening in the fall and I will probably go broke shopping there.

Awesome hair! I don't have the guts to do that yet, but maybe some day : )

I love your accessories. The bag and shoes complement each other so well! I know what you mean about F21 and H&M...on one hand I love them but on the other, I feel bad buying things which are cheap because they've been made in sweatshops and they are poor quality. And it's kind of awesome to be wearing vintage because no one else is wearing your clothes!

i LOVE this outfit a lot! yellow is one of my favourite colours, and with that fantastic blazer... so so fabulous, dear. <3

Good choice on the shoes, especially. Dig it, as usual.

I've never been much of a F21 gal. I used to hear friends rave about it but whenever I'd go visit I never actually purchased anything. I also have odd measurements... 39-30-42... and let me tell you, F21 does NOT usually work. It's more juniors sizing, which means everything is too narrow in the thigh and a**.

H&M on the other hand used to be my wardrobe's standby source for new material when I got my first office job out of undergrad, and the slightly dressier section doesn't have the suiting collections it used to (IMO) but I can still find a good piece at least once a visit.

My bigger concern with those stores is the sheer volume they (allegedly) waste. Academichic linked to an eye-opening story about how H&M purposely cuts up unsold clothing and puts it into the dumpster at one of their NYC branches. Considering that a goodly amount of the fibers in those articles of clothing are polyester, which is a plastic, which comes from petroleum... well.... I'd rather take a little more time at a couple thrift/consignment stores to find what I need. Ahem.... I should add that it doesn't mean I always do that. I do feel remiss when I don't give the secondhand clothing source to be my first choice.

Probably more than you were looking for, but there ya go. =) Have a very lovely weekend, all.

Firstly, your hair looks freakin' nice!
Secondly, I love that blazer's strong shoulder.
Thirdly, I can't stand malls anymore either! I went last weekend...and DIDN'T BUY ANYTHING.

Fourthly, I've really really gotten into thrifting. I started a few months ago, and oh my goodness gracious, I love it! No, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THRIFTING!
<3 LOVE IT! Phew. kay.

I think seeing as more and more people are going to F21, it's gotten a lot more mainstream. I still love the store and so far everything I've gotten there is lasted, but still, even I enjoy a high quality item even if it does cost extra.

The mural behind looks so cool :)

I love the yellow dress and the blazer. Where you were saying you feel like you cant wear flats with such a structured jacket, I reckon the yellow dress kind of makes the blazer seem more casual.

I love the color palette of this outfit, and the shadows in the photos are awesome!

I'm disappointed with F21 lately too... supposedly high-waist skirts aren't "in" anymore so everything sits low on the waist unless it's a business-y type. H&M is more tolerable/enjoyable in some instances - I usually find better pieces there, such as $10 jeans that fit perfectly. Am I expecting them to last? Hell no, but I'm going to wear them until their death.

I was at the mall the other day and was in a terrible mood by the end of the trip. Malls suck.

Ooh, that looks like an awesome book! I have a history of fashion book and I used to read the 18th century chapter every night before bed. That was an interesting phase of my life. :P I hope yours turns out to be equally engrossing!

ANYWAY. I really like the brown belt with the yellow dress. I think it's my favorite part of your whole outfit.

Midwest Mayhem said...

I have also been disappointed with H&M lately. F21 is still okay in my book, but their clothes have always been horrible quality. I've only gone to both stores in city settings, so I'm fortunate enough to not have to deal with the mall setting.

Great outfit! I'm not a fan of fast fashion shops, mainly because I volunteer in a charity shop here in the UK. People will donate bags and bags of clothes from fast fashion shops like Primark, H&M etc and most of it is unsaleable. And unwearable/unrecyclable, so there's a lot of waste fabric filling up landfill.

The Daily Fashionista said...

You look radiant in this look! I love the yellow! As far as fast fashion, I would say that about 20% of my wardrobe comes from those kinds of stores. I usually go to the mall once every 2 months get my cute little trendy item and then go home.

So the book you ordered, I'm assuming is a textbook. Will you be going back to school?

I like those stores for accessories, tops, and dresses. But I know I'm overpaying for the quality and underpaying for the labor so I often leave without buying anything. And then I don't go back for awhile because I know I can find the same styles thrifting. That said, a visit to those stores is an easy way to find out what's on trend.

Angie D said...

I totally agree with you about those mention "Fast Fashion" stores! They are great for super-trendy things, like jewelry. But, I'd rather score a classic staple (like your blazer) on sale at a high-quality shop.

I, too, feel old and cranky, but I'm 27! haha!

I HATE the mall anymore :P

Yellow is for sure your color!

I actually have a lot of trouble fitting into f21 clothes. They seem to have become even more poorly made recently, and I guess I'm just not the "right" shape for that store.

On a positive note, I love your yellow dress. Have a great weekend :)

Fifth Sparrow said...

Great outfit, that yellow dress is so cheerful and I love it with the blazer!
I completely agree with you on the fast fashion (though I also live 3 hrs away from the closet contender so...) I've found myself lately just wanting to buy quality stuff on sale, or yes, thrifting!

Also, please please let me know if that book is any good! It looks great, but I can't justify buying another fashion history book unless its awesome! I hope you enjoy it! xx

love this outfit :) cute as all get out with the blazer.

I have to agree on the F21, I have not "shopped" in forever, lately I only thrift, but recently I did go to browse F21 and I came out telling the hubs that they really need a F31 b/c it just doesn't do it for me anymore the way it used to.

kenda, personality of meh said...

I still love F21 and H&M for their quirky accessories, but I have found myself shopping for their clothes a lot less. Every now and then I find a nice item in those stores, but I don't rely on them for the majority of my clothing anymore.

Vanessa said...

I agree w/your F21 comment. Although, I still have quite a bit of luck at H&M. However, Forever 21 seems to be getting cheaper and a little too immature. I can find something once in awhile, but it's pretty inconsistent.

Jennifer said...

I love that yellow linen dress everytime you post it. It seems like such a find in forever 21 and I have to agree, like the last 15 times I have gone in there I have left empty handed and feeling really old. I'd take a jcrew, savers or banana republic any day.
Happy Weekend!
-JLK (i am just going to write that now- you know who I am. hehe) Enjoy your first day of no more travel seasons!!!

I love F21, but I have definitely noticed that stuff is not only getting cheesier, its getting waaayyy too short! Yikes! I still buy jewelry there, but I try to stay away from clothes.

We don't have F21 in Europe, but I know what you mean about H&M, I've noticed the cheap quality clothes and have just been feeling like I'm getting too old for such stores..
Nice outfit, and your hair looks awesome.

The only accessory you're missing is an adorable printed bandaid! You look great- I love the colors and espadrilles and jewelry.

I'm on the same wavelength as you re: fast fashion. I have loads of F21 stuff and some of it has held up quite well. But I'm really interested in acquiring some special pieces- the type of thing you just can't find at F21 or really, any chain stores.

So for me, it's less about quality and more about developing a unique style.

I've never lived anywhere with a Forever 21 but based on the website it looks like s***.

I find HM goes through stages. A couple of years ago I thought everything there was hideous, and stopped going. This spring I went in and saw about ten things I liked.

The quality can be really bad, but I find that in H&M if you are aware you can find plenty of things that are reasonable quality. Today, for example, I'm wearing a dress I bought in H&M in 2004 that is in the same condition I bought it in, after semi-extensive wear from me and my sister.

One shop I do hate though, is Zara. It's not even cheap and the quality is terrible. Then every once in a while there's something of goodish quality, and the price immediately goes up to ridiculous levels.

Urban Outfitters is a bit like that too actually.

Orchid Grey said...

Emily, so glad someone else sees right through Zara too, I'm so unimpressed with them and the quality!

with f21, I think you have to be really careful/creative how you wear it. I usually get silk/cotton stuff with basics. I usually also like to adorn the f21 stuff with vintage/thrifted/buffalo exchange stuff so it doesn't look so trendy.

I just try to stay away from the "I love my bf" tshirts!! :)

i haven't actually physically shopped a f21 store in years due to the crowds & crammed, unorganized clothes (i def sound like a grumpy, old woman in a 28 yo's body haha). i usually buy things online from there but i agree, lately their selection has been mediocre at best and (again sounding ancient) the hemlines are ridiculously short! i'm 5'6" with a long torso so things tend to be a bit shorter but 15" and 16" skirts are like bikini bottoms! even the jewelry has taken a hit i think. yes, much better thrifting it or bargain hunting unfortunately.

You make that blazer look so cool. I might even go so far as to use the phrase supa' fly.
The shadows on that wall really change it up from yesterday too.
The Forever 21 issue is difficult. The first time I went in there, I fell in love. The second, I fell out. From the outside it looks really good. I don't think I'm gonna give up hope yet, but thrifting is the joy of my life, so that's still my number one.

I feel like fast fashion stores are really hit or miss! Sometimes you strike a gold mine and other days you leave empty handed, but I try not to be too discouraged since they change their merchandise so frequently it's entirely possible you'll have better luck on your next trip. I still go to places like F21 even when I get down on them and haven't liked anything there for a while, because the thrill of finding the perfect dress for under $20 is unreal! Actually I recently bought a navajo printed tote there that is one of my favorite buys of the summer...

Diana, Songs and Fairy Tales said...

I feel the same way about those kind of stores. Well, I don't know F21 as they don't have any stores in Europe yet, but I used to shop a lot in H&M, Primark, Bershka...
Now I don't like them anymore. Maybe it has something to do with your age as you don't want to shop in the same places as teenagers do, I don't know. But I do think twice before buying something from that kind of stores, even if it's really cheap, like 5-10€. I prefer spending more money on timeless pieces and then buying some "trendy" stuff from H&M as it's much cheaper.

As for your outfit, I really love the yellow dress. And the espadrilles are gorgeous!

at this point in my life i cant afford to buy high end, designer items, so "fast fashion" and what i'll call "medium fashion" (jcrew, gap, banana republic, etc) is it for me. i do think that clothing designers should be protected by copyright laws -- that might be a big step into keeping the fast fashion stores in check.

sewcleverr said...

To be honest, I went into Forever21 earlier last week and came out empty handed. Not only was the clothing cheap and the product more expensive (than I had remembered from a year ago... there's not a F21 in the area where my college is), but I found nothing I really liked that fit me well.... the product is just not quality. I DID however find two dresses, one a maxi that fit me wonderfully and a turquoise 90s dress at a thrift store for I think.... 16 bucks total? I rather thrift or spend money for quality like Anthropologie, J Crew, etc. I do, however, always, always ALWAYS hit the sales rack first!

Helen said...

I am feeling exactly the same about fast fashion lately! Especially Topshop. I haven't bought anything from there in nearly a year because everything is so overpriced, badly made and on trend that it will go out of fashion so quick. I prefer buying more versatile pieces I know will work with my style over the years.

Rebecca said...

Just found your blog, really enjoyed looking through all your outfit posts. That yellow dress looks great with the Navy jacket/shoes. I agree about fast fahion places, a lot have gotten very expensive compared to the quality. H&M is the only one I ever buy much from.

I love F21 for accessories, but other than that I have a love/hate relationship with them. I never used to shop at H&M since I was confident that there clothes wouldn't fit me, but recently I have fell in love with alot of their pieces.

But I am with you that thrift stores are the the way to go.

I love the navy/yellow combo you did, you look great.

p.s. I cut myself shaving all the time. And guys think girls have it easy.

I think F21 is completely overwhelming. On the rare occasions I go in, I usually just stick to the jewelry counters and doing even go through the racks. I've also been reading a lot about their blatant plagiarism of designers, which is kind of gross.

I'm not really into shopping in malls anymore, either. (which is crazy, and I never thought I would say that!) I'd much rather go to a small boutique or thrift store and pick up really quality pieces on sale.

it's so funny that I just saw this, as I was just thinking this exact thought to myself. I had no idea they had been involved in lawsuits, but it totally makes sense. I've seen many a blatant Modcloth ripoff on F21. I think I may do a little post about this too.
